washing machine mold - a growing problem

Mold and Legal Issues: Front Load Washing Machine Settlements

In a previous post about unusual places for mold growth in the home, we discussed the problem of high-efficiency washing machines and mold.
The problem: mold grows in the gaskets of the high-efficiency machines.
For a lot of people, it’s a non-issue.
However,

for the mold sensitized, for infants and children, folks with asthma and allergies to mold, and people with compromised immune systems, washing machine mold growth has been a BIG issue.

The lawsuits claimed that the washers fail to self-clean. As a result, they accumulate bacteria and mold, resulting in bad odors, ruined laundry, and for the mold-sensitive individual, health issues.

In the last several weeks, the major manufacturers of the high-efficiency machines have made settlement on the law suits.

In June of this year, the manufacturer of 5.6 million Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore front-loaders made by Whirlpool reached settlement on several suits.

This past week, LG, the other major front-load washing machine manufacturer, agreed to a preliminary settlement of a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit covers 700,000 to 800,000 washers bought in the U.S. between 2002 and 2006. Owners of these washing machines have until October 10, 2016 to file a claim. The final approval hearing is on October 13 at the U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey.

What to do while you wait:

All these manufacturers have made design improvements to the newer models, virtually eliminating mold growth by adding special vents in the back, hold-open doors to get air inside, and self-cleaning cycles.

However, if you’re stuck with one of the older machines you can cut down on washing machine mold by:

1. removing damp clothes immediately
2. only using high efficiency (HE) detergent
3. running a cleaning cycle every month
4. wiping off the gasket after running the cleaning cycle
5. and leaving the door open when not in use.

Unfortunately, we can’t help you with washing machine mold.
